Police 'Concerned' With Cases Of Drowning Since Onset Of Rain Season

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it is concerned with cases of drowning which are occurring in the country since the onset of the rainy season.

In a statement, ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said most cases of drowning involve minors hence repeated calls for parents and guardians to monitor their children whilst they are playing. Said Nyathi:

In Hwange, on 11th December 2020, a male juvenile aged 7 years old drowned in Sianyama One Community Dam, Siabuwa after he fell off a floating log.

His body was retrieved and taken to the hospital for post-mortem. In Victoria Falls, on the same date, a male juvenile (10) drowned while swimming in Malata River.

In a related matter which occurred in Inyathi, on 7th December 2020, a 36-year-old man drowned while attempting to cross Mbembesi River, which was flooded.

His body was discovered on 11th December 2020, floating in the river, about 4 km away from the crossing point.

Nyathi urged members of the public to take heed of safety and precautionary measures in order to safeguard their lives during this rainy season.
