Chinese Miners Operating In Hwange Destroying Roads, Livelihoods And Causing Water Pollution - Report
Villagers in the Makwa area in Hwange East are complaining that the Chinese miners who are conducting mining activities are causing land degradation, water and air pollution, and destroying roads in the area, New Zimbabwe reports.
Villagers are reportedly fuming after the Chinese miners destroyed Deka Road which according to the publication, Hwange Town to the Zambezi River and connects to Victoria Falls via Jambezi and also proceeds to Binga along the Zambezi River.
The pollution has reportedly caused the death of livestock in the area and there was massive death of fish in the Deka area that prompted the Greater Hwange Residents Trust to approach the Zimbabwe Environmental Lawyers Association (ZELA) to investigate water pollution in the area.
A villager that spoke to the publication Fortune Mwembe said:
Villagers from Mashala and Simangani wards depend on the road and soon will be weaned off the whole district because soon the road will become totally unsafe to use. The road is now dangerous and might cause accidents.

Rosemary Shoko another villager from the area also said:
The road was destroyed by mining companies that operate in the area. What worries people is that our resources are being destroyed yet only less than 10 percent of locals are employed by those companies. They are causing pollution, livestock and fish are dying on a daily basis. Soon we will be an island because of the lack of road.
Fish is the source of employment for our people as every family has a member who does fishing along the Zambezi River and Deka. Livelihoods will be affected,
A man reportedly died along the road after the car he was traveling in overturned after hitting a pothole along the road. The government and councils are reportedly doing nothing as the Chinese destroy livelihoods, roads, and the area they are mining in.
