Danger: Storms, Lightning And Destructive Winds To Persist

Zimbabwe is expected to receive heavy rains with lightning and destructive winds from today through to Friday next week.

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned of flooding and gushes of water in some areas. The MSD said in a statement:

Thunderstorms are expected over much of the country, through to Friday 11 December 2020.

Heavy downpours (in excess of 50mm in 24 hours) are anticipated which will be characterised by destructive winds as well as lightning.

The storms are expected to persist from today, Thursday 03 December 2020, covering mainly the northern provinces (all Mashonaland, Harare Metropolitan, northern areas of Midlands as well as Manicaland provinces, and spread to cover much of the country during the course of the weekend beyond.

The MSD also cautioned about the probability of lightning strikes and has advised members of the public to avoid metal objects and tall isolated trees as well as to stay indoors where possible.

Flash flooding is also a possibility and people should avoid trying to cross flooded rivers and motorists have been advised to avoid driving during downpours.
