A Level Student Struck By Lightning Soon After Writing ZIMSEC Exam

A Mutoko High School Advanced Level female student was on Wednesday afternoon struck by a lightning bolt and died on the spot at Chinzanga Primary School in Mutoko.

Constance Machemedze (20) was on her way home after sitting for her Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) Examinations when a thunderstorm started.

She began running across the school grounds to find shelter but was struck by a lightning bolt and sustained burns on the right side of her body.

The incident was confirmed by Mashonaland East police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza who said:

The public must always take precautionary measures as stated by the Metrological Services Department to avoid such disasters from happening.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has forecasted heavy rains with lightning and destructive winds from today through to Friday next week.

The MSD warned on the probability of lightning strikes and has advised members of the public to avoid metal objects and tall isolated trees as well as to stay indoors where possible.
