An investor from Beitbridge is reportedly seeking permission from the government to start an airline that will link Beitbridge and the rest of the country, the Chronicle reports.
Mrs. Saliwe Marema, Toppick Investments said the plan was aimed at transforming the border town and contributing towards the country’s tourism sector.
According to the publication, Marema’s plan is to use the airstrip in the border town for the airline and they will use the private aircraft they have for now to service the routes they want to ply:
Mrs Marema said they already owned two private jets with a carrying capacity of 16 people and one helicopter they intend to use to service the Beitbridge to Victoria Falls, and Beitbridge to Harare routes. The business has mobilised enough capital to set up a hanger and for the requisite standard civil works at the airstrip.
Speaking on the project Mrs. Marema said:
We have since lodged our application with the relevant Government departments. Our plan is to have a hanger and rehabilitate the current airstrip in the town.
Beitbridge is developing rapidly as a town and hence we want to invest in this critical service and contribute to Zimbabwe’s tourism development.
Meanwhile, the government has announced it is constructing a State of the art airport in the border town of Beitbridge 20kms North of Beitbridge. .
