Another School Closed After 10 COVID-19 Cases

Matobo High School in Matebeleland South has been closed after ten learners at the institution tested positive for the coronavirus.

The school is the second to be closed after John Tallach in Matebeleland North was also closed after 100 coronavirus cases had been recorded at the school. The cases have since risen to 184.

The development was confirmed by Matabeleland South Provincial Medical Director Dr Rudo Chikodzore who said the cases at Matopo were detected after their rapid response team responded to reports of pupils with higher than normal temperatures.

Samples were also collected at other schools in the province which called into their hotline and results are due, she added.

The head of the Matobo district taskforce committee on Covid-19, Obey Chaputsira, said health workers had been deployed to begin a process of testing everyone at the school.

This comes after Vice President Constantino Chiwenga had reported that Prince Edward in Harare has also recorded coronavirus cases.

Meanwhile, Members of Parliament (MPs) are calling for the immediate closure of the schools saying they were prematurely re-opened putting the lives of learners and teachers in danger from the virus.

The government says the coronavirus may not end therefore the country has to put in place mechanisms which will allow the people to go on their day to day activities unhindered.

Speaking in Parliament last week, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi said Zimbabwe has to adjust to the new normal.
