Bulawayo Faces Another Coronavirus Lockdown

Bulawayo’s provincial COVID-19 taskforce is considering putting the whole city or specific suburbs under lockdown in a bid to quickly combat the continued increase in the number of coronavirus cases in Zimbabwe’s second-largest city.

Chair of the taskforce, who is also the Minister of State Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube told Sunday News on Saturday that they have has since written to the council’s health department requesting information on suburbs deemed to be coronavirus hotspots. She said:

We have since instructed the Bulawayo City Council’s health department to give us figures on the hotspot suburbs in the city, after which we will decide whether we do suburb specific lockdowns or lockdown the entire city.

What continues to be our worry is that the city’s statistics continue to rise hence the need for us to adopt a concerted effort in addressing this issue.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Health and Child Care in the past seven days (until Saturday), the city accounted for 84 of the 288 new infections in the country of which 54 were of returning citizens.

Bars and night clubs in the city operating throughout the night in violation of a curfew between 10 pm and 6 am, coupled with more people discarding wearing masks, have been cited as driving the rise in new coronavirus infections.
