MDC-A Challenged To Come Clean On Muchehiwa Abduction

The Executive Director of the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA), Siphosami Malunga said it is worrying that the Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance has remained silent on allegations that one of its senior officials was involved an abduction case.

The MDC Alliance Women’s Assembly Chairperson for Bulawayo Province, Tendai Masotsha was fingered in the abduction of journalism student Tawanda Muchehiwa on 30 July this year.

Posting on Twitter, Malunga said the MDC Alliance’s handling of the case is deplorable and party members should be worried. Malunga wrote:

Considering that so many of its own members have been targeted, suffered and continue to be victims of abductions, the MDC-A handling of the Tawanda Muchehiwa abduction and alleged role of its Bulawayo Chairperson Tendai Masotsha is deplorable. I’d be very worried if I was its member.

The delays, long silences, inaction, indifference by the [MDC Alliance] to such serious allegations [in the matter of Muchehiwa] against [Masotsha], a senior leader of its organization leaves so much to be desired.

It should by now have long cleared her or confirmed the allegations and expelled her.

On the 13th of October 2020, MDC Alliance secretary-general Chalton Hwende said the report on Masotsha would be tabled at the party’s National Council Meeting that month but up to now, there has been no announcement made.
