Zimbabwe Is Ready To Assist Mozambique Fight Terrorism - ED

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said Zimbabwe stands ready to helping neighbouring Mozambique fight the Islamist insurgency in Cabo Delgado Province that has dragged on for four years now.

Mnangagwa wrote on Twitter on Tuesday expressing concern over the conflict which is also known as the Cabo Delgado Civil War that has adversely affected civilians.

Posting after Mozambique Police this week claimed the militants gathered over 50 victims in a football field and beheaded them, he said:

I am deeply shocked by reports of terrorist activity in Mozambique. These acts of barbarity must be stamped out wherever they are found.

Zimbabwe is ready to assist in any way we can. The security of our region is paramount in the protection of our people.

The insurgency started in October 2017 and reports suggest that over 1 100 people have been killed while 100 000 are said to have been displaced.

In addition to the fact that Zimbabwe got help from Mozambique during the liberation struggle, the landlocked Southern African country has economic reasons for assisting Mozambique.

Zimbabwe stands to lose more if the conflict gets out of hand since it uses Mozambique ports to link with the international community.

Some, however, said this will be attracting disaster for Zimbabwe as the militants would start terror attacks on Zimbabwe.
