ANC Tells Biden To Remove Sanctions On Zimbabwe

South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC) has in its congratulatory message to the United States’ president-elect, Joe Biden, called for the removal of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.

The message comes after Biden has beaten outgoing president Donald Trump in this year’s election to win the presidency.

The sanctions were imposed on Zimbabwe two decades ago following the controversial fast track land reform programme which displaced some of the white farmers in the Southern African country.

Zimbabwean authorities, the Southern African Development Community and Africa at large believe the sanctions are adversely affecting the general populace by hampering national economic growth.

The ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) secretary-general Meokgo Matuba in the wing’s congratulatory message to the US Vice President-elect Harris, the first Indian American and first female to clinch the powerful post, said:

Harris as the Vice-President of the US must be the voice of reason against white supremacy, patriarchy and male chauvinism in the US and across the globe. Serving under President Joe Biden, she must also be at the frontline to fight against imperialism and among others call for an end to the illegal occupation of Palestine land by Israel, an end of sanctions against Zimbabwe, Cuba and many other countries.

It remains to be seen whether or not the Biden administration would alter its foreign policy against Zimbabwe.

Some analysts have since cast doubt on Biden doing any changes observing that the former Vice President in the Barak Obama administration was one of the senators who sponsored ZIDERA.
