ZANU PF Councillor Arrested For Public Violence

A ZANU PF councillor was recently arrested by police for his alleged role in the violence that rocked the ruling party’s primary elections at the beginning of last month.

Maclean Nyamucherera, Councillor of Kwekwe’s Ward 6, was arrested on Thursday after violence rocked ZANU PF primary elections held on 4 October in the Midlands city.

The primary elections, set to choose a candidate to stand for the party in the looming by-elections, were abandoned after violence flared up.

Police officers and polling agents were attacked by youths who alleged vote-buying and deliberate delays of the voting process, among a number of other allegations.

Nyamucherera last week appeared before Kwekwe magistrate, Cheryl Tembo facing public violence charges and was granted $2 000 bail.

He will be back in court on 18 November for the commencement of trial.

Nyamucherera becomes the eighth person to be arrested in connection with the violence.

The others are Maisva Zvidzai, Mawire Burden, Tafadzwa Mutema, Amon Mutondorwa, Elliot Gideon, Mutandwa Itai, and Brian Hokoyo.

The seven were arrested by police last week and were released on bail. They will also return to court on 18 November for trial

The ZANU PF primary elections pitted clergyman, Bishop Kandros Mugabe and Energy Ncube, who both are eyeing the Kwekwe Central seat.

The seat fell vacant following the death Masango Matambanadzo of the National Patriotic Front (NPF). Matambanadzo died in January this year of suspected food poisoning.
