Bushiri And Wife To Spend Another Weekend In Custody

Self-proclaimed Prophet Sheperd Bushiri and his wife Mary will spend the weekend in custody after their bail case was postponed to Monday 2 November 2020, eNCA reports.

Bushiri was arrested for fraud over a week ago and he has been in custody ever since the day he handed himself to The Hawks.

According to the publication:

Bushiri, his wife Mary and several others are facing fraud, theft and money laundering charges over an elaborate pyramid scheme.

The state’s case for denying bail centres on the Bushiri’s being a flight risk because they have several passports and addresses.

In his affidavit, Bushiri denied ever interfering with witnesses or sending someone else to do so. He also said that all passports were handed to the investigating team and that their children are still in South Africa.

Bushiri who is facing a similar charge of fraud in a case that was suspended till May 2021 is also in trouble with South Africa Home Affairs which said he acquired his permanent residency fraudently.

According to eNCA:

Advocate Anneline van den Heever handed a document to the court from the Malawian government, stating the couple was given a Malawian diplomatic passport and not diplomatic status.
