MDC Alliance Snub Mnangagwa's SONA

MDC Alliance legislators Thursday boycotted President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) at Parliament which he made virtual from State House to legislators at the August House.

MDC Alliance legislators have since 2018 been snubbing Parliamentary sessions attended or presided over by President Mnangagwa saying he was illegitimate after he allegedly rigged the 2018 presidential election.

The party’s deputy spokesperson Clifford Hlatshwayo told NewZimbabwe that the absence of the legislators was a deliberate move. He said:

It’s not a boycott but an action we have taken because we have to be heard. No one voted for Mnangagwa, the courts imposed him for a reason. The reason is to control the resources of this country. But for him, he does not have a solution to the issues of social decay, issues of civil servants’ welfare.

Meanwhile, some opposition parties including MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe and the National Constitutional Assembly were represented.

MDC-T chairperson and Midlands senator Morgen Komichi spoke to NewZimbabwe after the SONA and said there was a need for national leaders to resolve the impasse in a bid to address the economic crisis bedevilling the country.

He made the remarks when Zimbabwe is still submerged under economic, humanitarian and political crises which some say are being exacerbated by the political stand-off between the major political parties in the country.
