Harare In Unplanned Shutdown Of Major Waterworks

Harare City Council (HCC) has announced an unplanned shutdown of Morton Jaffray, its major waterworks due to shortage of a major treatment chemical. Below is the public notice.

UNPLANNED SHUTDOWN OF MORTON JAFFRAY WATERWORKS.

Please be advised that we have no choice but to shut down Morton Jaffray at about 1800 hours today due to stock-out of aluminium sulphate, the major treatment chemical.

Zimphos, the supplier of the said chemical, raised the red flag on Monday 11 October 2020, indicating that they had run out of bauxite, the primary raw material used to manufacture aluminium sulphate and needed assistance with ZWL$2 583 000 required for VAT payment purposes to import 1000 tonnes of the commodity.

As of Wednesday 21 October 2020, Zimphos indicated that the required amount had been paid to their suppliers, however, positive proof of payment into their bank account was required before the goods could be dispatched. They have confirmed this morning that logistics are now in motion to get the bauxite at their Msasa factory at about 6pm today and commence production of alum immediately.

The first load of alum into Morton Jaffray is thus expected at 0600 hours on Friday 23 October 2020. A further 4 hours will be required before we start pumping treated water out of the water works.

Thus, there will be limited production during the day up to 6pm and total loss of production for a projected 16 hours commencing 1800 hours today.

Any inconveniences caused are sincerely regretted.
