Govt Urges Exiled Ex-Ministers To Clear Names

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Home Affairs, Kazembe Kazembe has urged exiled former ministers to come back and clear their names.

His remarks are in reference to the majority of Generation 40 (G40) kingpins skipped the country’s borders in 2017 during the military assisted transition that propelled President Emmerson Mnangagwa to power.

The former cabinet ministers who include Saviour Kasukuwere, Jonathan Moyo, Patrick Zhuwao and Walter Mzembi feared retribution from Mnangagwa whom they humiliated during the height of the succession race in the ruling ZANU PF.

A number of them are wanted for alleged corruption and abuse of office during their tenures as government ministers. They deny the charges saying they are politically motivated.

Addressing a media conference in Harare Friday, Kazembe said they should come back and clear their names if they are innocent. He said:

We are seized with securing the return of fugitives from justice that are scattered in various parts of the globe.

Zimbabwe is known for its fair justice system which will afford all such fugitives the opportunity to return home and clear their names.

As law enforcement agencies, our role is to bring suspects to justice then the normal procedure take effect.

We urge the suspects to do themselves a favour by voluntarily returning to clear their names if they are innocent.

Zimbabwe tried to engage the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) in 2019 to extradite Kasukuwere but Iterpol rejected the request on grounds that the case would have implications on the organisation’s neutrality.

The Southern African country has this week engaged South Africa in a new bid to extradite Kasukuwere who is facing four counts of abuse of office during his time as the Minister of Local Government.
