This Is A Joke - ARTUZ Scoffs At The Govt's Salary ''Increment''

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has scoffed at the announcement by the Public Service Commission that declared that the least paid teacher will earn over ZWL$12 000.

In a twitter post dismissing the announcement, ARTUZ said thee COVID-19 allowance expires next month and the $12 000 was still below the poverty datum line which was pegged at close to $20 000:

1/2 This is a joke. The gvt intends to deceive the world into believing that they adjusted our salaries. To the contrary they simply added current teacher income to COVID19 allowance and announced the total figure. Teachers have been earning the same inadequate income since July.
2/2 COVID 19 allowance expires in December 2020. The ZWL 12 000 announced is below the modest monthly budget of a low income earner as announced by CCZ, pegged at over ZWL 20 000. We still humbly submit that gvt should restore the value of our salaries. Trs remain incapacitated.
Teachers have been on strike ever since schools reopened for writing classes over a fortnight ago citing incapacitation. Negotiations between the government and the Apex council which represents most civil servants reportedly collapsed last month before they resumed again sometime this month.
Teachers are demanding an equivalent of $520 and the government is saying it cannot afford to pay them that much for now.
