We Will Not Budge - ED Threatens Striking Teachers With Non Payment Of Salaries

President Mnangagwa has threatened to withhold the striking teachers ‘salaries as he said the teachers cannot hold the government at ransom by withholding their services, The Herald reports.

The President was speaking at a briefing in Mutare when he said the government will pay those reporting for duty if the striking teachers continue with their strike:

I have heard that after schools reopened in Manicaland, only 30 percent of teachers have reported for duty. Let me assure all of you that Government will never be held to ransom by the teachers.

By failing to report for duty, they think they will push us to do what they want. No, we are very principled on that. However, we are happy that some have gone back to work.

We will apply the principle that those who work will get paid. Those who are at home are not considered to be at work.

Meanwhile, the Primary and Secondary Education Minister Cain Mathema at one point also threatened to replace striking teachers with unemployed teachers. Mathema however said the 29% of the teaching staff reporting for duty is enough to take the writing classes through the exam preparation process.

Teachers are demanding an equivalent of between $500 and $520, the government is not able to match their request for now.
