"Be Realistic" - Government Tells Striking Teachers

Zimbabwe’s Labour Minister Paul Mavima has said the concerns which are being raised by striking teachers have been sent to the President and Cabinet but urged the teachers to be realistic.

Teachers are demanding the restoration of their 2018 salaries, around US$500, and are vowing not to go to work if their demands have not been met.

Schools reopened on 28 September after a coronavirus induced premature closure in March but teachers have been boycotting classes. Mavima said:

They have raised their concerns and we are taking these concerns to the President and Cabinet. We have heard their concerns, but we also appealed to them to be realistic in their concerns and consider the economic conditions prevailing in the country.

“The salary negotiations between the Government and the National Joint Negotiating Council are ongoing. But Government decided to cushion its workers, while waiting for these negotiations to be finalised and the appeal to civil servants is to be patient while waiting for the outcome.

The teachers’ industrial action is ongoing despite the government’s 40% increase of the cost of living adjustment.

Teachers say they are incapacitated to execute their contractual duties and responsibilities as the soaring inflation has continuously eroded their salaries.
