Soldiers Kill Two Men Following Heated Debate
Two Victoria Falls men were shot dead outside the resort town after they allegedly tried to disarm two anti-smuggling soldiers deployed to man the Zambezi River, the Chronicle reports.
NewsDay, however, reports the story differently suggesting that one soldier based in Hwange went berserk after an argument with boozers and “indiscriminately fired into the crowd at Chisuma shopping centre, killing two men.”
NewsDay reports that the soldier had an argument with the now-deceased Morgen Sibanda, a tour guide with Wild Horizons, and his colleague Dumisani Mpofu — both from Chisuma 2 village and fatally shot them.
Chronicle quotes the police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi as confirming the shooting incident which took place on Wednesday evening. He is quoted as saying:
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating the circumstances in which two suspects tried to disarm members of the security services who were on anti-smuggling deployments in Victoria Falls on 30 September 2020 resulting in a shooting incident and deaths of two suspects. As the security services team was at Chisuma Business Centre, at 7:30 pm monitoring anti-smuggling activities and dispersing people who had gathered in contravention of Covid-19 regulations, one of the suspects assaulted a security service member and then tried to disarm him resulting in the scuffle.

Chronicle says the deceased had an argument with one of the soldiers over an undisclosed matter. The state-run publication further reports that the duo later ganged up against the soldier and tried to disarm him but his colleague arrived and shot them.
Mpofu is said to have died instantly, while Sibanda died as he waited to be ferried to or upon arrival at Victoria Falls District Hospital.
NewsDay failed to have a statement from Nyathi but managed to speak to Chisuma councillor Givemeagain Moyo on Thursday who said soldiers had been terrorising villagers during the lockdown period. Moyo is quoted as saying:
We are in great fear as a community.We have lost confidence in government as these people were deployed to patrol the river, but they are now killing villagers at the shopping centre.
