The Nelson Chamisa led MDC Alliance has said it is consulting party supporters in various party structures about changing the party name, Business Times reports.
The name being used by Nelson Chamisa, the MDC Alliance was a fortnight ago claimed by the court resurrected MDC T 2014 structures leaders who said they were the real MDC Alliance at an MDC anniversary celebration event.
MDC Alliance Secretary General Chalton Hwende speaking to Business Times said supporters were divided over the issue:
Some of our party members want us to continue with the name despite Khupe claiming ownership to it. We also have other members who are saying that let’s change the name and adopt a new name because of the problems being associated with it by Khupe working with Zanu PF.
This group is mainly composed of some of our party elders and founding members but we are discussing the issue
While Morgan Komichi maintains that the MDC Alliance name belongs to the outfit they run because the court gave them authority to use it in the ruling that declared Khupe the rightful MDC T leader:
We are aware of the court ruling and it gave us the right to use the name and we are just following the court order in claiming our rightful name.
However, exiled politician and former cabinet MInister Jonathan Moyo has warned Nelson Chamisa about the possible ramifications of changing the party name and said:
The MDC-A should not change its name as a political party. No. That would enable Mwonzora with Mnangagwa’s SACU to use the MDC-A name to create fictitious crimes against his erstwhile colleagues. Rather, since it’s now a party, the MDC-A needs a new coalition name for elections!
The MDC Alliance had said they were not going to change their party name at the insistence of the ruling party.
