MDC-T Meet To Prepare For “Re-unification” Talks With Chamisa

The opposition MDC-T reportedly held a hastily-arranged meeting of its standing committee in Harare with officials alleging that it was in preparation for re-unification talks with the Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance.

This comes when tensions between the two MDC outfits are rising due to a number of issues including Khupe’s recalling of MDC Alliance councillors and legislators and the seizure of Harvest House by MDC-A youths.

MDC youth assembly chairperson for Harare, Paul Gorekore — who led the takeover of the Harvest House told the Daily News on Tuesday that they were determined to achieve a dialogue between Khupe and Chamisa. He said:
The standing committee, which is here today (yesterday), will be attended by the MDC leadership, and from that meeting we expect them to come up with a resolution to redirect the engagement process … but the fact is that we are really desperate for unity.
We are trying by all means to push our leaders to find each other, sit down and solve their differences, which we believe can be resolved amicably.
When I talk about leaders, I am referring to those who held various positions when President Morgan Tsvangirai died in 2018.
MDC-T’s reinstated interim chairperson, Morgen Komichi confirmed the meeting saying the agenda was to discuss “all those issues, including the fate of the expelled leaders.”

The former MP for Highfield West Happymore “Bvondo” Chidziva claimed that youths from both camps were fed up by their leaders’ brawling.

He said the MDC should “go back to the 2014 structures and start working together without apportioning factions to each other.”
The prolonged leadership crisis in the MDC started to manifest in 2018 when the party’s founding leader, Morgan Tsvangirai was on his deathbed.
Khupe and Chamisa are leading the race to succeed the late former Prime Minister of Zimbabwe.
