MDC-T Resumes Preparations For Extra-ordinary Congress

The MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe has resumed preparations for the delayed Supreme Court-directed extraordinary congress to elect a replacement for the late Morgan Tsvangirai who died in 2018.

The party’s acting secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora told the Daily News on Friday that the party will start receiving nominations of candidates aspiring to challenge interim leader Thokozani Khupe in a fortnight.

Mwonzora revealed that the Supreme Court is set to give the MDC-T a new congress date on October 1, following the party’s application for variation. Said Mwonzora:

We agreed that the congress process to start immediately and hence next Wednesday’s national standing committee will deal with the logistics, including coming up with an electoral college and the nomination process, which should start in the next week or so while the date of the congress will be announced after October 1.

The Supreme Court initially directed that an extraordinary congress be held within 90 days of the order that was delivered on 31 March.
