ZINARA Rot Divides Cabinet – Report

Scandal-ridden ZINARA has reportedly divided the cabinet after sources told Business Times that some ministers are reportedly pushing for the return of ZIMRA as the sole revenue collector after it emerged that ZINARA is spending more than its stipulated threshold of the revenue collections.

A well-placed source that spoke to the publication said:

Government is divided over Zinara’s continued collection of revenue citing duplication of roles between the revenue collection agencies. There is an argument that the country at the moment cannot afford two revenue collection agencies duplicating roles.

Tensions are reportedly high between treasury officials and ZINARA’s Chairman Mike Madanha because the former is reportedly spending way more than the 2.5% it is supposed to retain for its operations on expenses such as hiring vehicles for its top managers while the latter says the stipend is too low.

ZINARA last year reportedly spent US$2 million on luxury vehicles for its top managers and board members and a recent audit revealed that it paid ZWL$142 million to illegally hire road maintenance contractors.

  1. Not surprising! This organisation has been a rip-off from the start! Toll roads all over the place, with no toll-free alternatives, along with shoddy maintenance in a lot of places and that’s just the start. South Africa has had toll roads, but there is also a toll free alternative, even if it is just a scaffy dirt track! It was nothing more than a rip-off when it was first formed and has nothing done worthwhile since its inception.
