Pomona Dumpsite Fire Rages On

The fire at  Pomona Dumpsite in Harare is reportedly still burning fiercely and this is affecting service delivery by Harare City as they claim they are unable to do refuse collection in some areas because many resources are being expended on extinguishing the infamous fire, The Herald reports.

The council last week apologised for not being able to render service delivery on time in a statement that reads in part:

We apologise to our valued customers for the incapacity to remove the garbage. We appeal for understanding and tolerance while we attend to the fire. Council is grateful to all stakeholders, individuals and companies that are assisting with material resources and moral support.

Harare Residents Trust Director Mr Precious Shumba said the delay was posing a Health Risk to Harare residents because garbage is piling up in many suburbs in Harare:

The car park and bus terminus at Warren Park 2 shops are filled with uncollected garbage. This is the same situation in most communities and is a major challenge.

The city council is not collecting garbage from households and the unhealthy environment is a possible cause of disease outbreaks.

The result is that most residents lose confidence and trust in the local authority and will not be motivated to pay their monthly bills, thus revenue inflows decline to dangerous levels.

The fire in Pomona saw other organisations bringing resources to help the council extinguish the fire that destroyed 75 hectares of the dumpsite earlier a few days ago.
