Factionalism And Tribalism Threaten To Tear ZANU PF Apart

ZANU PF national political commissar Victor Matemadanda has admitted that the party’s cohesion is being threatened by resurgent factionalism and tribalism.

Speaking in Harare on Tuesday, Matemadanda, who is also the Deputy Minister of Defence and War Veterans Affairs, warned ZANU PF party structures against embracing regionalism. He said:

We respected (the late vice president Joshua) Nkomo as our leader. People from Plumtree up to Mutoko sang songs praising Nkomo.

Our relationship should not be premised on tribalism and regionalism. Some are saying let us wait and see whether we are going to support a certain leader or not.

That’s what you are doing here in Harare … this habit has grown in Harare. It is now like a huge tree and you are saying we are tribal specialists.

Matemadanda also chided the party’s leaders for using social media platforms such as WhatsApp, to expose the problems bedevilling the former liberation movement.

You are in a WhatsApp group with many people and you think what you are discussing is a secret?

… We don’t want leaders who go on Twitter and Facebook exposing party problems.

This comes after the party recently expelled two politburo members, Tendai Savanhu and Cleveria Chizema for fanning factionalism and division within the party.
