UK: Zimbabwe Not Fulfilling Promises On Reforms

British ambassador to Zimbabwe, Melanie Robinson has expressed concern over alleged human rights violations in Zimbabwe which she said a contradicting the country’s promise to implement reforms.

She speaks at the backdrop of a shrinking democratic space with state security forces being the culprits. The diplomat said:

Two years ago President @edmnangagwa made important commitments to reform. We’ve regularly called for these promises to be delivered on. But human rights violations and systemic corruption continue. We again urge respect for the constitution and #ActiononReform

Stopping human rights violations, tackling corruption without fear or favour and reaching out across divides remain the best way to unlock Zimbabwe’s potential and help secure a better future for all. The UK stands ready to support. #ActionOnReform #ZimbabweLivesMatter.

Mnangagwa had pledged to implement political, media, and electoral reforms with the international community saying that was the only way to re-engage the embattled Southern African country.

Observers say the government has not yet implemented even the recommendations that were made by the 2018 election observer missions and those by the Motlanthe Commission that was instituted following the August 1, 2018, shootings.

Authorities deny reports of human rights violations in Zimbabwe saying the country’s enemies are portraying a negative narrative to damage the image of the government and country at large.
