Harare magistrate Lazini Ncube has postponed to Wednesday afternoon the ruling on MDC Alliance vice-chairperson, Job Sikhala’s bail application.
The firebrand Zengeza West legislator was arrested last Friday and was brought to the court Saturday on charges of inciting the public to commit violence.
Sikhala, through his lawyer Eric Matinenga, is challenging the charges brought against him by State claiming they do not constitute an offence. Matinenga said on Tuesday:
Speaking out cannot be by any means interpreted as inciting violence.
Political bantering using the words ‘fight’ and ‘war’ does not constitute inciting violence.
Meanwhile, prosecutor Garudzo Ziyadhuma said by calling Zimbabweans to besiege the country’s embassies through the videos he shared on social media, Sikhala was inciting people to commit acts of violence. The prosecutor said:
He said he is not afraid meaning that he was taking a confrontational approach. We do not dispute that citizens have rights, but they should be exercised within the law by also safeguarding other people’s rights.
Sikhala is the latest MDC Alliance official to be arrested in recent months with the party’s co-vice presidents, Tendai Biti and Lynette Karenyi Kore, secretary-general Chalton Hwende, and spokesperson Fadzai Mahere out on.
Whichever way and whatever time and place, diplomatic dialogue, tolerance and plurality remain the maxims of good statesmanship and progress while the opposite is true in their absence. The major question stands still, what is becoming of the next generation in such a dynamic and merciless world, where people should progressively share platforms for the good of posterity. God bless
