AU Suspends Mali's Membership After The Coup That Ousted The Country's President

A Military mutiny in Mali which forced the country’s current president to resign has prompted the African Union to suspend the West African nation’s membership over the coup, The Herald reports. This was revealed by the AU Peace and Security Department on Wednesday in a tweet that said:

The African Union Peace and Security Council suspends Mali from the African Union until the restoration of constitutional order and demands the release of President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, the prime minister and other government officials forcibly detained by the army.

After former President Keita’s resignation on Tuesday according to CNN, military leaders behind the mutiny calling themselves the National Committee for the Salvation of People (CNSP) addressed the citizenry and promised a political transition,  and presidential polls within a reasonable time.
