Warrant Of Arrest Issued For Former Minister

Gweru Provincial Magistrate, Charity Maphosa, on Monday issued an arrest warrant for former Midlands Provincial Affairs Minister, Jason Machaya after he absconded court on 28 July.

Machaya’s legal representative, Aleck Muchadehama, confirmed to Midlands News that indeed the court has issued a warrant of arrest against his client.

Muchadehama, however, described the warrant as administrative as he indicated that the court was aware that Machaya was unable to attend court due to a medical operation. Said Muchadehama:

The court is aware that Machaya received the operation on August 8, and he needs at least 14 days to recover according to the doctors.

Magistrate Maphosa postponed the matter to September 18 for judgement.

The former minister is out on $1 000 bail.

Machaya is facing criminal abuse of office charges after he allegedly allocated and disposed of State land during his time as Minister.

Machaya in his defence is arguing that he acted in delegated authority in his capacity as Midlands Minister of State.
