Youths Say The Country Is Bound For A Bumper Harvest If Pfumvudza Is Implemented Well

The National Chair for the Apex Council for Youth in Agriculture John Muchenje has said Zimbabwe can have a good harvest this farming season if an agriculture programme, Pfumvudza is implemented well.

The Pfumvudza concept is a crop production intensification approach that allows farmers to concentrate inputs and labour on a small land unit for optimum yields. Muchenje said:

The introduction of this food security concept dubbed Pfumvudza will no doubt achieve the intended goal, what is interesting is that the youths have embraced this programme with vigour and they are raring to go. Some in various parts of the country have started preparing their small pieces of land – we have the energy as youths, and if implemented at national level at a household level I tell you the country is bound for a bumper harvest this cropping season.

He added that the young generations should drive this initiative and feed the nation so that Zimbabwe regain its breadbasket status despite challenges such as climate change.

Half of the Zimbabwean population is facing starvation as the country has since two decades ago failed to produce enough for consumption let alone exportation.

Climate change and poor implementation of the land reform programme are some of the reasons cited for low production.
