Zim Govt Moves To Block Prominent Lawyer Mtetwa From Representing Chin'ono

The Zimbabwean government has taken an initiative to block prominent lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa from representing detained journalist and filmmaker Hopewell Chin’ono accusing her of professional misconduct.

Prosecutor Whisper Mabhaudhi has since filed an application with Harare Magistrate Ngoni Nduna alleging that Mtetwa has been posting Chin’ono court case proceedings on; “Beatrice Mtetwa and the Rule of Law” Facebook page.

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights executive director, Roselyn Hanzi told journalists at the Harare Magistrate’s Court that as a result of the application, Chin’ono’s bail hearing had been set aside.

However, Mtetwa told journalists later at Harare Magistrate Court Thursday that she does not own the Facebook Page established in her name. She said:

I am not on Facebook. It does not belong to me. It belongs to Laurie Conway who made that documentary.

Beatrice Mtetwa and the Rule of Law is a film documentary by Conway which highlights the importance of the rule of law by focusing on Beatrice Mtetwa’s legal work in Zimbabwe.

Chin’ono, a co-producer of the documentary, was asked to take the witness stand to explain the origins of the Facebook page and he said the move to remove Mtetwa as lead legal counsel was a deliberate calculation to deprive him a lawyer of his choice which is against the constitution.
