VP Chiwenga Says Govt Will Continue Downsizing Unproductive Farms

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has said the government will continue downsizing unproductive farms in a bid to improve productivity.

He speaks when half of the country’s population is facing starvation following a poor farming season and a series of poor agriculture policies over the past two decades.

The government recently embarked on a downsizing campaign meant to restore Zimbabwe’s status as the breadbasket of SADC.

Speaking during a tour of a winter maize crop at Farm 40 in Middle Sabi, on Wednesday, Chiwenga said all farmland must be used fully or reassigned. He said:

Government will not go back on the initiative to downsize unproductive farms as this will promote production.

Others, however, believe that the exercise is not being conducted transparently hence will not achieve the intended objective.

Meanwhile, some say land is being used as a political tool to instil loyalty to the incumbent government after it appeared as if the exercise was targeting President Mnangagwa’s political enemies.

Some of the notable individuals who have been affected by the exercise are Jonathan Moyo and Saviour Kasukuwere, both alleged members of the G40 faction that was aligned to President Mugabe when Mnangagwa then VP was being persecuted.
