Nurses Reiterate USD, PPE Demands, Vow To Continue Strike

The Zimbabwe Nurse Association (ZINA) says nurses will not end their 46-day strike until the government gives in to their demands.

Nurses have rejected a salary increment in Zimbabwe dollars, insisting on US dollar salaries.

They have also vowed not to return to work until the government avails adequate personal protective equipment (PPEs).

In a statement issued this Monday, ZINA urged the few nurses who are still reporting for duty to stop forthwith in the interest of their profession. The statement read:

RE: UPDATE ON ONGOING INDUSTRIAL ACTION

With reference to the above, please find an update below:

1. Today marks the 46th day since we withdrew our labour.

2. There has still not been any offer from government and so the impasse continues

3. We reiterate our position that we will not return to work without proper remuneration as we are incapacitated from doing so.

4. We further reiterate that without adequate PPEs we will also not return back because our hospitals have proven to be Covid-19 hotspots and the unprotected health workers have been the most vulnerable victims as the numbers of those infected are increasing. We are not prepared to gamble with our lives and this aspect is non-negotiable.

5. Regarding these two issues, no amount of intimidation or pleading will make us change our stance. Ours are labour, not political grievances and so we cannot forego them because of political reasoning.

6. Thank you to the many nurses who have withdrawn labour. To those
who have not, we encourage you to act in the best interests of the nursing profession as shown by the majority.

7. We will continue to update you. In the meantime, we continue with our
rallying call – NO USD, NO WORKI NO PPE, NO WORK!

ALUTA CONTINUA!!!!
