Meet The 25-Year-Old Zimbabwean Maker Of Beautiful Ottoman Stools, Chairs... From Used Tyres

When some are seeing no value and are throwing away used tyres which would lie idle or be used by kids in the streets, a 25-year-old Warren Park resident is seeing opportunities.

Mr Chrispen Mahachi, an Accounting graduate with the University of Zimbabwe, is currently not only doing articles with a local firm, he is also making beautiful ottoman stools and tables from used tyres, an initiative he started around May when the nation was already under the coronavirus induced lockdown.

With his organisation, Pahukama Furnitures, a name inspired by “the need to build long-lasting relationships with clients,” Mahachi is making a wide range of products including flower pots, roped table, pet house, stool chair, designer chair, display table and display set which range from as low as US$6 to US$140

Pindula News spoke with him on Wednesday and he revealed that plans to get more products not just to homes in Harare but also to institutions in the tourism and hospitality sector.

Asked on how the business started, Mahachi said he grew the desire to do something of his own. He said:

Honestly, what motivated me to start wasn’t the idea of recycling tyres… Had been arguing with myself for a long time on the need to start something feasible and sustainable.

If I had it my way, (I) would have started a construction company, however, it was too big for my small head, capital wise…

He added that the construction industry is lucrative considering the high demand for services as people are building houses. He continued:

So I asked myself what is it that those who are building homes need. I started looking for idea on Pininterest on nice and not so capital intensive furniture types.

That’s when the tyre ottomans kicked in. It’s not entirely a new idea, it’s just something well executed at local platform.

Mahachi’s workshop is in Warren Park 1, a Harare suburb which is immediately after the Heros Acre along Bulawayo Road. Contact me on: 0779821838 /0732821838

Pahukama Furnitures currently has three members – Mahachi (Finance and Administration); Mr Gamunorwa (carpenter) and Tanaka (marketing and sales).
