More Harare City Officials Appear In Court Over Corruption

Acting Harare City Council town planner Samuel Nyabeze and surveyor Munyaradzi Bowa on Friday initially appeared before magistrate Mr Ngoni Nduna facing criminal abuse of office charges.

The duo is separately charged for conniving with mayor Hebert Gomba, who has also been arrested, to alter an approved layout plan belonging to Youths in Business Housing Trust and giving the land to Taringana Housing Scheme.

In so doing, the two allegedly converted the State land into council land. The move was also in violation of the Environmental Management Authority Agency (EMA) regulations which prohibit erecting structures on wetland.

When the agency inspected the land, it noted that 40 percent was wetland, recommending that this part be left out of the planned development but the duo defied the recommendation and went on to demarcate the wetland into 530 housing stands.

Magistrate Nduna remanded them in custody to today for bail application. Their alleged accomplice, Gomba, was last week denied bail with the court saying he was likely to interfere with witnesses who are his subordinates.
