WATCH: Govt Responds To Reports That Strict Lockdown Regulations Are Meant To Block 31 July Protests
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana has dismissed as ungrounded the allegations that the strict lockdown regulations imposed recently are meant thwart anti-government protests slated for the 31st of July.
The allegations were made after the government increased security personnel enforcing the lockdown and increased after on Tuesday President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared renewed COVID-19 lockdown, imposing a 12-hour curfew to be effective starting Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. local time.
The president said the renewed lockdown will be stringently enforced by the country’s security forces, including the military and police.
Mangwana said the regulations are meant to contain the spread of the coronavirus whose cases have spiked lately.
He added that although the citizenry had a right to demonstrate, the timing was wrong as the country is grappling with the coronavirus pandemic.

Mangwana refused to comment on the arrest of Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume saying their cases were before the courts.
