100 000 People Arrested For Flouting Lockdown Restrictions

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it has arrested over 100 thousand people for violating lockdown regulations.

National police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Paul Nyathi said there has been an increase in cases of those absconding from quarantine facilities and kombi crews operating illegally. Said Nyathi:

Many people are no longer observing lockdown regulations, in just two days more than a thousand people were arrested for unnecessary movement and for not wearing masks.

There is also an increase in the number of commuter omnibus operators who continue to defy our calls to stop operations immediately.

On Monday the national COVID-19 taskforce directed that only those civil servants who were approved by the Public Service Commission to provide essential service should report for work, with the rest remaining in lockdown.

As of Monday, 20 July 2020, Zimbabwe had recorded 1 713 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 472 recoveries and twenty-six (26) deaths.
