Oxford University COVID-19 Vaccine Safe, Induces Immune Reaction - Preliminary Results
Results have suggested that the coronavirus vaccine which is being developed at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, is safe and induces immune reaction.
Doses of the vaccine, called AZD1222, were given to 1 077 healthy adults aged between 18 and 55 in five UK hospitals in April and May.
Professor Andrew Pollard, who is leading the study at the University of Oxford, said the immune system has two ways of finding and attacking pathogens, that is, antibody and T-cell responses. Pollard added:
This vaccine is intended to induce both, so it can attack the virus when it’s circulating in the body, as well as attacking infected cells.
We hope this means the immune system will remember the virus, so that our vaccine will protect people for an extended period.

His remarks were echoed by Professor Sarah Gilbert, co-author of the study who said early results hold promise although there is still much work to be done before the effectiveness of the vaccine in containing the virus can be ascertained.
So far, governments and other stakeholders have tried several ways to combat the virus but there is consensus that the vaccine is the ideal solution to weather the storm.
