ZIMSEC Projects Final Exams Will Be Written In December And January

ZIMSEC is projecting that Grade 7, ordinary and advanced level examinations will be written in December 2020 or in January 2021 because this will allow learners to finish their syllabus which was interrupted by the outbreak of the coronavirus, which led to schools closing prematurely on 24 March, The Sunday Mail reports.

This was revealed by ZIMSEC chairman Professor Eddie Mwenje who said they were going to consult stakeholders before they announce the projected final examinations dates for the writing classes.

As soon as the June exams are done, we will start printing the November examination question papers. However, once the President announces new opening dates, we will sit down with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education so that we come up with dates for the examinations.

November 2020 examinations will be written, but they will only be written when students have completed the syllabus and when it is safe to do so, even if it means the examinations will be written in December or January next year

Professor Mwenje said they were going not going to compromise on quality that is why they were projecting that exams be written if possible next year:

Remember, some of these students will be going to tertiary institutions, they have to be properly examined and given the right grade. That is why we are saying there is a possibility that the examinations may be written in December or January next year. However, all this will be finalised when we meet with the ministry when reopening dates are announced

Teachers have proposed exams be written in February and March next year while other educationalists implored the government to consider continuous assessment as part of the learning system.

The government is yet to announce new reopening dates after it differed opening schools after COVID-19 cases surged to an all-time high in the past few weeks.
