Schools Might Not Re-Open This Year - Misihairabwi

Educationalists have urged the government to abandon the academic calendar in the wake of the novel coronavirus which has grounded many operations worldwide, The Herald reports.

This was revealed by the Primary and Secondary Education Parliamentary Portfolio Committee chair Ms Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga who said schools were going to open when its safe to do so which might not be this year:

There is anxiety among parents and learners; they are not sure if the deferment is temporary or will cover the rest of the year. Government must be clear on whether or not they intend to reopen schools this year.

As a committee, we are suggesting that we reopen when it is perfectly safe to do so and it does not appear like that is possible this year.

The government earlier this week deferred reopening schools which were scheduled to be opened on 28 July for the writing classes. Meanwhile, Kenya has already abandoned the 2020 educational calendar and announced that school will resume in January 2021.
