Suspended MDC-A Councillor Says Party Must Respect Court Ruling

Bulawayo MDC Alliance Ward Four Councillor Silas Chigora has accused the party of victimisation following his suspension by the party’s provincial executive last week.

Chigora was suspended for allegedly abandoning the party to join the MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe.

He, however, dismissed his suspension as a non-event saying he could only be suspended by his parent party the MDC-T, not the MDC-A. Said Chigora:

I think most of my colleagues are preferring to ignore facts. The MDC Alliance is a collision of seven political formations, which was mainly put in place for the purposes of the 2018 elections.

The Supreme Court ruling then came in to clarify that the Alliance’s Congress in Gweru purportedly turning it into a party was a non-event, it also did the same regarding Dr Khupe’s Congress which was held in Bulawayo.

Instead, the court directed that the party returns to 2014 structures. What I am therefore saying is that I am not backing either of the two leaders but I am an advocate of constitutionalism as guided by the courts.

Since the controversial Supreme Court ruling in March, Khupe has been attempting to dismantle the MDC-A by expelling several high-ranking parliamentarians and councillors.

As a result, some party officials elected under the MDC-A banner have joined her party for fear of losing their source of livelihood.
