"Govt Should Have Consulted," Residents Oppose Plan To Bring Quarantine Centre Close To Homes

Residents of Mpopoma-Pelandaba, high-density suburb of Bulawayo are reportedly resisting a government move to relocate returnees from Bulawayo Polytechnic to Rio hostel in the residential area.

The move comes after last week the government announced that all tertiary institutions which have been serving as quarantine centres in the city and other parts of the country will be disinfected in preparation for the re-opening of schools.

Residents however are of the conviction that the move will expose them to the coronavirus. Area councillor, Donaldson Mabuto told NewZimbabwe.com weekend that the government should have consulted residents on the issue. He said:

I have just heard through rumours that returnees from Bulawayo Polytechnic will be relocated to Rio hostel.

As the councillor for the area, I have not been officially informed about this decision but what I can say is that there is a lot of uneasiness among residents over this issue.

He added that the government has the duty to educate the residents about measures if any, which have been put in place to protect the residents from getting the virus.

This comes amid reports that some returnees in quarantine centres escape to buy food and come back.
