'ED Must Go' Police Officer Granted $3 000 Bail

Human rights lawyers on Saturday secured the release of Milton Murairwa, a police member, who was detained on Friday and charged with insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Murairwa was arrested after he allegedly posted a message which reads “ED Must Go” on a WhatsApp group for Mbare police officers. ZLHR said in a statement:

In Harare, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights has just secured freedom for Milton Murairwa, a police member, who was detained after he was arrested Friday and charged with insulting President [Emmerson] Mnangagwa for allegedly posting a message which reads “ED Must Go” on a WhatsApp group for Mbare police officers.

Murairwa was freed on RTGS$3 000 bail by Magistrate Mangosi after his lawyer Moses Nkomo of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights applied for his release from custody.

As part of bail conditions, Murairwa was also ordered not to interfere with state witnesses and to continue residing at his given address.

Murairwa is the second police member to be arrested and charged with insulting President Mnangagwa in less than two months after police in June apprehended Shungudzemoyo Kache for committing the same offence.
