Trump Arm-twists Schools To Reopen As US Coronavirus Cases Pass Another Bleak Milestone

United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to withhold funding for schools if they continue refusing to reopen. Schools desperately need funding.

This comes when coronavirus cases in that country have passed a 3 million mark while fatalities are now over 132 000. The number is higher than of all European countries combined (2 528 811) and also greater than those of all Asian countries (2 686 831).

Posting on Twitter, Trump said:

In Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and many other countries, SCHOOLS ARE OPEN WITH NO PROBLEMS. The Dems think it would be bad for them politically if U.S. schools open before the November Election, but is important for the children & families. May cut off funding if not open!

Education groups quickly slammed Trump’s remarks. AASA’s advocacy director Sasha Pudelski, tweeted:
To be clear: there is no mechanism by which they can decide to magically withhold funding without Congressional authorization.
Lily Eskelsen Garcia, president of the National Education Association, told CNN’s Brianna Keilar Wednesday, that nothing of what “Trump said in the last 48 hours has been safe or responsible.”
Analysts say Trump is more concerned with retaining power at this year’s election.
