1000+ Zim Students In US Universities Holding Online Classes To Come Back Home

The US government has ordered all foreign university students who are learning at institutions that are now conducting online classes to return to their home countries if they cannot transfer to institutions that are holding face to face classes, The Herald reports.

This means close to 1343 Zimbabwean students currently studying in the US might just come back home if they fail to transfer to the few universities that are holding face to face classes.

A statement by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office, the responsible authority for issuing VISAs reads in part:

The US Department of State will not issue visas to students enrolled in schools and/or programs that are fully online for the fall semester nor will the US Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States.

Active students currently in the United States enrolled in such programs must depart the country or take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction, to remain in lawful status.

The move drew some criticism from Democratic Party’s Elizabeth Warren, a United States Senator who said it was xenophobic and cruel:

Kicking international students out of the US during a global pandemic because their colleges are moving classes online for physical distancing hurts students. It is senseless, cruel and xenophobic.
