Khupe To Nominate Replacements For Chamisa's MPs

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) is ready for filling of proportional representation seats in the Senate and National Assembly since no by-elections are required.

Several seats fell vacant after interim MDC-T president Thokozani Khupe expelled Nelson Chamisa-aligned MDC Alliance senators and National Assembly legislators to pave way her allies.

ZEC will use the results of the 2018 election for the filling of the vacancies in both the Upper House and Lower House (for those on proportional representation tickets).

This means that Khupe will nominate the replacements for the legislators she expelled since the Supreme Court ruled that Chamisa’s MDC Alliance MPs actually belong to the MDC-T.

Under the Electoral Act, when the President of the Senate or the Speaker of the House of Assembly notifies the ZEC of a vacancy, this will be gazetted and the political party holding the seat will be invited to nominate a replacement.

ZEC had originally suspended voting during the lockdown but recently announced that the public health emergency is likely to be the “new normal” and so is putting in new voting rules.
