Government Warns Private Schools Against Reopening Before July 28

The government has said it will deregister, without further notice, private schools that reopen before 28 July amid reports that some schools were contemplating doing so, arguing that they had the required protective equipment and disinfectants to fight coronavirus.

In a statement on Friday, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Cain Mathema said there would be serious repercussions if the schools reported to be planning an earlier reopening disregarding the law. He said:

The ministry would like to warn some authorities of trust schools, private schools that flout the directive that it will not hesitate to deregister their institutions should they continue to defy Government directives on the reopening of schools.

Schools were closed earlier towards the end of March when the government enforced a national lockdown to curb the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the new coronavirus which causes a respiratory illness called COVID-19.

The Cabinet has approved the reopening of schools on 28 July to allow time to disinfect classrooms, make masks and source other personal protective equipment.
