Mutare Mayor In U-turn On Bigwigs' Land Grab

Mutare mayor Blessing Tandi has reversed the council’s decision to allocate residential stands to top Zanu PF officials, security chiefs and senior government officials.

Tandi told Zim Morning Post this Thursday that the council did not consider everyone on the list (the list had more than 20 people) but offered the residential stands for sale to people who were on the waiting list and live or work in Mutare. Said, Tandi:

We trimmed the list based on allocation we had to give. We did not consider everyone as per the said report (list) but we had to consider time stayed in Mutare and whether you are on our housing waiting list and your stay must be in Mutare or your work destination.

Tandi backtracked on the issue after political commentators and residents had criticised the decision.

United Mutare Residents and Ratepayers Trust (UMRRT) director Sebastian Bakare demanded that Mutare City Council avails residential stands only to people who are on the waiting list regardless of political affiliation and
occupation.

The leaked document had a list of 22 names. Among them was Nick Mangwana, who is the Permanent Secretary in the Information and Broadcasting Services ministry and the Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs, Ellen Gwaradzimba.

Security chiefs from the police, prisons, army and CIO as well as judges and staff from the judiciary service and other senior government officials were also on the list.
