Two Inmates Arrested After Leading Protest At Quarantine Centre

The whereabouts of two inmates at Mushagashe Training Institute quarantine centre near Masvingo are not known after they were reportedly taken away by police and military officers after leading a demonstration at the isolation centre.

Daniel Mutambandini and Kudzai Machingambi were arrested on Tuesday for demonstrating against harsh living conditions at the COVID-19 quarantine centre on Monday evening.

The 23 inmates demanded a meeting with authorities after they spent 21 days of their stay at the centre without being tested for the virus or seeing a medical person.

However, Masvingo Provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector Charity Mazula denied that there were arrests made at Mushagashe quarantine centre.

Masvingo Covid-19 Provincial Taskforce spokesperson Rodgers Irimayi also denied reports that two inmates were arrested saying there are some inmates who were sending out false information. He said:

No inmates were arrested. There are some activists in the centres who are sending out wrong information. Inmates who reached 21 days were tested and those with 10 and 8 days are being tested today; if they are found negative they will be released tomorrow.

Inmates at Mushagashe told The Mirror that living conditions at the centre were deplorable as the place has no sanitisers, face masks, gloves and electricity.
