“It’s Crazy,” – ED’s Advisor Speaks On Civil Servants’ USD Allowances

Former opposition MDC MP for Bulawayo South, Eddie Cross has said it is not logical to pay civil servants’ allowances in United States dollars.

His remarks come when government has proposed to temporarily pay workers a USD75 allowance and to increase their salaries by 50 percent.

Commenting on the development, the economist who is also a member of the Presidential Advisory Council (PAC) which advises president Mnangagwa said:

What can you say, it’s crazy, it’s crazy. I don’t think we have the money.

I think the problem is it establishes a precedent for the private sector as workers will demand the same thing.

He added that the move was a blow to the dedollarisation agenda the government embarked on last year.

Meanwhile, nurses have rejected the offer and have since embarked on an industrial action to force the government to pay their salaries in United States dollars.

Workers say the proposed increment will not make any difference considering that the country’s economy is inflationary.
